John's successful training odyssey began at Colac, before he moved to Flemington in 1986. This started a successful career that included Group 1 successes with Lady Jakeo who won the Blue Diamond in 1993 and the William Reid Stakes, as well as Kenvain who won the Oakleigh Plate in 1994.

Sadler became a founding member and shareholder of Aquanita Racing when it commenced operating in early 1998 as a business partnership with fellow trainers Russell Cameron (joined April 1998) and Robert Smerdon (joined August 1998). In 1999 accepted a very lucrative opportunity to move to Dubai where he trained privately and successfully for the Maktoum family. Following Dubai, Sadler had a short stint in Singapore before returning to Australia, training first for Sheikh Khalifa and then for Lloyd Williams. Sadler played a major role in preparing 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient as assistant trainer at Lloyd Williams' Macedon Lodge and was officially recognised as Williams' head trainer just a few days after the win. He won the Turnbull Stakes with Efficient in 2009 and a host of races including the Sydney, Adelaide Cups and Sandown Classic with Zipping.

After leaving Williams' employ in 2010, Sadler created Malua Racing in partnership with General Manager Troy Corstens. In 2013 Sadler tasted Group One success again when Linton, ironically a former Team Williams stayer, saluted in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

John, regarded by his peers as a person who has a brilliant and innate understanding of horses leaves no stone unturned when it comes to getting his horses 100% right for race day. He is a keen form student and placement of his horses in the right races is an art he has mastered over the years. An extremely liked and highly respected person, John now rejoins the company he helped start with life long friend, Robert Smerdon.

Sadler joins an Aquanita team that today comprises trainers Robert Smerdon, Simon Miller and Tony Vasil. He will retain the controlling interest in his own business but utilize the support facilities Aquanita provides that includes not only its administration arm but its own veterinary practice, transport business, agistment property and outstanding training facilities.
