Aquanita Formguide
Smerdon's Magnificent Seven
2010 at Warrnambool will be remembered as the year of Aquanita and in particular Robert Smerdon. The Caulfield based trainer swept all before him at the famous May Carnival winning seven races for the week.

In doing so Smerdon was the recipient of a $90K 4WD for taking out the trainers bonus prize. To collect a trainer has to have four winners for the week including one of three feature races.

Tuesday started well with Shewan winning an early race while later in the day Some Are Bent saluted in the $60,000 Brierly Steeplechase.

A rare family double was accomplished on Wednesday when Black And Bent (half brother to Some Are Bent) won the $100,000 Galleywood Hurdle.

Smerdon has previously won The Galleywood three times with Big Dermott (1996), Tahbob (1997) and Some Are Bent in (2007). The Galleywood is one of the feature races of the carnival and crucial to Smerdon having any chance of claiming the car.

In an instant Smerdon had achieved the coveted trainer's prize as King Kalakaua then Rich Unicorn saluted in the final events on the program giving Smerdon four winners for the day and five in total for the week.

Never one to do anything half hearted Smerdon followed up on the final day with a further two winners. Enzed Girl saluted early doors while Tinamou was the icing on the cake bolting in at good odds in later in the day to give the Smerdon team seven winners for the week and the coveted trophy.

Tony Vasil with only two runners for the entire week chipped in with his own winner on Thursday, Sharada storming to victory as well.

Mike Symons (Aquanita director) recognised as the savior of jumps racing in this state enjoyed a highly successful 24 hours as his two horses Some Are Bent and Black And Bent both saluted. He capped a fine week as he is also a part owner of Tinamou.

New Track for Ballarat

Victorian Minister For Racing Rob Hulls announced the state government "is helping to fund a new $2.4 million uphill synthetic training track at Ballarat Turf Club to assist horses develop superior strength".

Hulls said the new 1400m training track would provide trainers with "a unique opportunity to develop strength in horses that they would be unable to do on standard training surfaces.

At 8m wide, the track will follow the natural incline of the hill on the side of Mt Pisgah and allow for slow & fast training work. The Brumby Labor Government is providing $2.16 million for the Ballarat project through its $86 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund. Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria is jointly contributing $240,000.

Horses to Follow

  • Hermosa Corona
The four year old saluted at start one for Simon Miller, easily accounting for his opposition in city grade. A great training effort as Hermosa Corona had the fear of the finish line and had not saluted for eighteen months. Can improve further over the Perth winter and there looks to be more wins in him while Simon Miller is calling the shots.

  • Eggypop
An exciting three year old who strode away to an easy victory at his first start for team Vasil. Eggypop had previously started as a two year old for David Hayes. Looked ultra impressive in winning and with the winter carnival in Brisbane looming could find himself heading north in search of black type

  • Black And Bent
While its hard for younger siblings to step out of the shadows of there older brothers Black And Bent is certainly carving out is own name. The gelding is racing in terrific form with victories over the obstacles and on the flat. He looms as the rising star of jumps racing this season, under the tutelage of Robert Smerdon he can take all before him this year.

Around The Tracks

  • Stradbroke Day is now one of the highlights of the Australian racing season. Three Group Ones are run, the Stradbroke, Queensland Derby for 3-y-o and TJ Smith for 2-y-o. After a big day of racing the best way to wind down is Sunday at the Breakfast Creek hotel. All Brisbane based owners are invited for a social afternoon at one of Brisbane's iconic hotels. Please RSVP to sam@aquanita.com.au if you wish to attend.

  • Champions Gallery from the Tony Vasil yard is a great story. The rising eight year old has been plagued by injury over the last three years overcoming bowed tendons and a severe case of laminitis. The entire started his career in England where he won three times. He was purchased to race in Hong Kong where he won and also placed in there Derby. Injury cut short his career but after a long layoff he has resumed with two runs in Australia.

  • The Robert Smerdon trained Persian Star proved that a year is a long time in racing. The five year old mare is in career best form having recently won the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington a Listed 3200m $200K race. Travel back in time twelve months and Persian Star was beaten favourite in two races at Mildura.
