| Smerdon Gets The Benz |
Much has been said of Aquanita trainer Robert Smerdon's record breaking effort at this year's Warrnambool May Racing Carnival.
Smerdon trained 7 winners to become the first trainer in the history of the carnival to receive the coveted trainer's bonus of a Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI.
Local Mercedes-Benz dealer Callaghan Motors has offered the prize each year for the past 16 years and whilst several trainers have gone close, Smerdon is the inaugural recipient. To win the bonus he had to train 4 winners over the prestigious carnival one of which had to be a designated feature race.
"Robert's effort in being the first trainer to achieve the bonus was a great training feat but to do so by claiming seven rather than the mandatory four winners was simply outstanding and highlights his ability as a premier trainer" Steve Callaghan dealer principal of Callaghan Motors said upon presenting Smerdon with his vehicle.
"We have been proud to be involved in this Carnival for many years. This year's event arguably saw some of its best racing and in particular the quality of the jumpers was second to none. Robert's mixture of winners over the jumps and the flat highlights his versatility and makes him a worthy winner" Callaghan added.
The vehicle was delivered to the Caulfield stables of Aquanita and proudly received from Steve Callaghan by Smerdon.
"It is the support of sponsors like Callaghan Motors that maintains the interest and excitement of competing in these Carnivals and there is no doubt it acts as a real incentive for trainers to attend. The lure of the vehicle and the fact that it has never been won before acted as an added spur to me this year. We planned our attack on this carnival many months ago and took a large and purpose selected team to it. Fortunately our best laid plans were realized and it is indeed a thrill to receive the prize. I sincerely thank Callaghan Motors and Mercedes -Benz for their generous support." Smerdon said when receiving the keys to the vehicle

Horses to Follow
- Balavan
The rising five year old took every bit of time to reach the racetrack yet he made up for lost ground very quickly. He won on debut by three lengths in maiden class in impressive fashion. At his next outing he took on some seasoned campaigners jumping a grade in the process to keep up the unblemished record. While the win was decided in the stewards room the result was never in doubt
- Two Beauties
The well bred filly took ten starts to break her maiden but did the right thing at start eleven and won that to. Has a lovely pedigree and is a great type and will no doubt go on to win better races in the future.
- Intencion
The son of Commands made a notable debut winning on the Geelong synthetic track. Ridden by Glen Boss the colt was untroubled and went on to record a comfortable win. Praise was high from the Group One winning jockey and we may see Intencion in the spring contesting top end races.

Around The Tracks
The old adage that you should never go the early crow was again proved recently. Robert Smerdon's galloper Black And Bent was nominated as a contender for the Staging Connections Victorian Racehorse of the Year award. Within days of the announcement the star was diagnosed with a tendon causing him to be sidelined for a year. The rising five year old has won more races than any other in Victoria this year.
The conclusion of the spring carnival has a new date. The Ballarat Cup the traditional full stop of the carnival has switched dates. For the first time the 2010 Ballarat Cup will be run on Sunday the 21st of November moving from its traditional day of the third Wednesday of November. The 2010 Spring Racing Carnival will run from Wednesday, 29 September to Sunday, 21 November, encapsulating 96 meetings across the state.
With a month to go in the season the team is set to record a bumper year. Last year's winner's target of 254 is still within reach while the total prize money won has already been surpassed.
