| Season 2009 - 2010 in Review |
The new racing season is here and its time to review the success of the past year. Team Aquanita enjoyed the second best year in its history in terms of winners but eclipsed the prizemoney record set the previous year by nearly a million dollars.
The feature victories came from the established crew of Birchley, Smerdon and Vasil. The one item missing from the stable resume is a Group One winner.
There were a number of close calls with Valdemoro twice being runner up to Faint Perfume in the VRC Oaks and Storm Queen Stakes. Tony Vasil had his high class colt Carrara finish second in the Caulfield Guineas behind Starspangledbanner in what was a top quality field.
Robert Smerdon had a Group One placing with Lady Lynette when she placed second behind the best race mare in the country Typhoon Tracey in the Myer Classic. Lady Lynette had a fantastic season winning a number of races for Smerdon including one each at Listed and Group Three level.
For Birchley his biggest win came in New Zealand when Sister Havana saluted in the Listed Karaka Million.
Of the 255 races won by the stable for the season, eight were in Listed Grade with two each at Group Three and Group Two level.

Lucky Secret crosses the line in his record breaking win in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m). The Rubiton gelding broke the long standing 1000m track record with Nash Rawiller aboard. He stopped the clock at 55.97 seconds, in the process becoming the first horse to break 56 seconds at Caulfield.

Horses to Follow
- Gold Rocks
The speedy filly started her career by winning four of her first five starts, amongst the wins Western Australia's richest two year old race the Karrakatta Plate. Winless for her next nine starts she was transferred to Simon Miller who produced her first up for a one length win. Miller is giving himself a great reputation in improving horses from other stables and this mare is one to follow as she has speed to burn.
- Alberton Park
The lightly raced mare is building up an impressive record for trainer Liam Birchley. She is a model of consistency as from twelve times to the track she has a record off three wins and six minor cheques. This preparation looks like a good one for her after resuming from a spell with a good win over 1000m at Doomben. She has a good record fresh so expect her runs to be spaced.
- Roadtrain
Tony Vasil has great record producing horses for their first win at the Swan Hill track. This year Altius saluted in the race named after his famous sibling Elvstroem, while more recently Roadtrain continued the good run for the stable with a four length win on debut. He had plenty in reserve over the sprint trip and appears that he could easily get up to a mile andf beyond.

Around The Tracks
The VRC has increased prize money for several races including the group 1 Mackinnon Stakes on Derby Day. The traditional lead up race for the Melbourne Cup will now be worth $1 million up from $750K last year. Prize money for the Patinack Farm Classic (1200 metres) and the 2011 Lightning Stakes (1000 metres) has been increased by $250,000 to $750,000. The 2011 Kewney Stakes (1400 metres), for three-year-old fillies, has gone up $100,000 to $500,000.
Robert Smerdon enjoyed his best year in the metro area recording 44 winners for the season. His effort was enough to see him finish second on the trainers premiership behind Peter Moody. Interesting to note that the first three in the premiership are all Caulfield based. Caulfield had four in the top ten list with Tony Vasil completing the year in tenth position.
Our two interstate trainers also had solid seasons with Simon Miller breaking into the Perth top ten in just his second year of training. While in Brisbane Liam Birchley had to settle for second behind tear away leader Robert Heathcote
