| The Bent One Bows Out |
The extraordinary career of Champion jumper Some Are Bent has come to an end. The gelding closed his race track life with a fifth placing in the JJ Houlahan Hurdle a race he had previously won twice.
On returning to scale the nine year old was retired immediately by senior part owner Mike Symons. Some Are Bent is a unique horse in Australian racing; he has the distinction of being the only horse to win a million dollars in stakes domestically over the jumps.
Some Are Bent started his career under the guidance of fellow Aquanita Caulfield trainer Tony Vasil. Success came on debut where Some Are Bent showed enough dash to win over 1100m at Benalla in a three year old maiden. The second and final of his two flat wins came four starts later over 1400m at Cranbourne. Later in his three year old year he was good enough to finish third in the Listed SAJC Yalumba Stakes over 2000m.
Some Are Bent transferred to the stable of Robert Smerdon during his four year old season. The pair combined to win almost every feature jumps race on the Victorian calendar. His final victory came at Warrnambool in July the spiritual home of jumps racing in Victoria. He was twice named Champion Jumper of the Year his career record reads 63 starts 14 - 10 - 5 amassing $1,017,923

Horses to Follow
- Breitling
The three year old colt has had just the three starts including a win at Caulfield against a good class of horse. Resumed after a short let up in the Vain Stakes where he wasn't too far away. Robert Smerdon will target the rich three year old races with him in the hope he measures up.
- Power Princess
Simon Miller picked up Power Princess over the winter and owners have reaped the benefits. The four year old mare has started twice for Miller winning on each occasion. Miller looks like he has a smart one on his hands with the lightly raced Power Princess who looks capable of winning up to a mile.
- Favela Star
The four year old Favela Star is building an impressive resume having not finished further back than second in five starts. Trainer Birchley has taken the talented son of Captain Rio through his grades placing him carefully to ensure that he is in the money. The system is working as Favela Star has saluted at his past three. Careful race selection by the shrewd Birchley should see the picket fence of wins continue.

Around The Tracks
The Melbourne Racing has mooted the idea of having a ghost meeting at either Caulfield or Mornington on Melbourne Cup Day. MRC Chairman Mike Symons said the meeting would be free to the public and would attract people from the southern suburbs who didn't want to travel across town and pay $75 to get into Flemington.
Robert Smerdon made a brave charge in attempting to win the TVN Memorable Moments competition. Smerdon finished in second place behind Bart Cummings who just happens to have a habit of winning everything he enters. Smerdon may be able to make amends as Some Are Bent and Black And Bent are nominated for the jumper of the year awards.
A new initiative was recently launched by Victorian Minister for Racing Mr Rod Hulls. The Racehorse Outplacement Program will provide viable options for owners and trainers to place their horses with an experienced outplacement service provider, who will assess the horse's suitability for re-training, conduct a re-training program and match the horse with a new owner via Cyberhorse's Virtual Saleyard, Virtual Formguide and Virtual Equestrian.
